Corporate Responsibility

At Aviva, our vision for corporate responsibility (CR) is to act responsibly with a long-term view of how we do business.

Being a good corporate citizen is essential to our long-term sustainability and it enables us to make business decisions that support key areas of focus.  Click on the tabs below for more detail.

Aviva participates in many community and charity initiatives.

United Way
Aviva employees across the country support the United Way through payroll contributions and event participation. Aviva also contributes to the campaign, joining with employees to help make a difference in the lives of thousands of Canadians. Aviva has been a supporter of the United Way for over 25 years.

Aviva Community Fund
A unique competition designed to lead, empower and support positive change across the country, the Aviva Community Fund competition set out to engage Canadians to help make positive change in their communities.

The heart of the Aviva Community Fund was centred around an online portal – www.avivacommunityfund.org.   Through this portal, Canadians submitted ideas for change at a local or national level; whether it be constructing a new playground in a local neighbourhood or providing much needed support to a national charity.

The most popular ideas, chosen by Canadians, were evaluated by a judging panel and the $500,000 prize was allocated to bringing the ideas to life.

Aviva Canada’s Employee Community Programs
Many Aviva employees make a difference in their communities through their own donations and volunteer efforts. The Employee Community Programs provide our employees with an opportunity to support organizations they are close to – either through time off to volunteer or monetary support.

Dollars for Doers – Employees who contribute at least 40 hours per calendar year of volunteer time to a registered charity can apply to have Aviva Canada donate money to that organization.

Matching Dollars – Employee donations to a registered charity can be matched up to a maximum of $100 per employee per year.

Volunteering on Company Time – A standardized company policy that allows employees to volunteer at a registered charity for up to 15 hours per year during work hours.

Other initiatives
As an organization that has peace of mind as its core purpose, it’s no surprise that hundreds of our employees across the country participate in local charity and fundraising events including:

  • Relay for Life
  • Big Bike Heart & Stroke
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride for Diabetes Research
  • Ontario Students Against Drunk Driving (OSAID)
  • Canadian Paraplegic Association Wheelchair Relay Challenge.

Managing and reducing our impact on the environment continues to be a priority for our business.  In 2006, Aviva around the world became the first carbon neutral insurer.  We continue to accomplish this by offsetting any remaining emissions against carbon credits gained from projects in countries where we operate.

For example, Aviva Canada achieved the following reductions in 2009, as a result of improvements in building management systems, changes to the car fleet and IT adjustments:

• 11.3% reduction in CO2 emissions
• 12.6% reduction in water usage

We’ve also engaged our broker partners in one of our initiatives to save paper, the STEP Program:  Save Trees, Eliminate Paper.  So far, over 300 brokers have signed up for print suppression.

Earth Day has grown into Earth Month and Aviva has engaged in a number of creative initiatives including a clothing drive in support of the non-profit organization “Dress Your Best”, used book drive, tree planting, park cleanup and even a home energy audit seminar.

At Aviva, I am Recognized for Who I am and My Contribution Matters! This is our employee promise and it is central to working at Aviva. It goes well beyond compensation and a solid benefits package.

Aviva has many programs that support employee development and reward great work such as our Leadership Academy and our Bravo Award program. We also place a strong emphasis on engaging employees through regular communications and our annual employee survey.

Our customers’ peace of mind and well-being are at the forefront of our vision to be the most trusted and valued home, auto and business insurer.

We want every customer to experience Aviva as the company that recognizes them as an individual, understands their point of view and responds to their needs. This is demonstrated through our Claims department where our Customer Care Advisors deliver dedicated service supported through programs such as Premiere Healthcare and our Claims Service Satisfaction Guarantee.
